A view of SCHAUM/SHIEH’s (@schaumshieh) beautiful renovation the Judd Foundation’s Architecture Office in downtown Marfa, Texas. One facet of a multi-part restoration and rehabilitation of the Judd Foundation’s Marfa campus, this early 20th century, 5,000-square-foot building was purchased by artist Donald Judd in 1990 and transformed into living spaces and offices where he developed numerous large-scale architectural projects and installations. Today it houses furniture, objects, and architectural plans and models designed by Judd. ♥️Artist
When art is a “ripening disease”
It sucks your soul
inside and out

Art is life
Life is art
Like I love you,
and I want to eat your heart out

Marfa

Ps. The “Ripening disease” is borrowed from Hoa Nguyen. I’ve been noting my poetry down while going on studio tours. I will gradually publish them under my posts. 😜 #marfa & #westtexas is magical for a girl like me. Oh how much I enjoy the isolation of and a spiritual spin. Take one step out away from work and the crowds, let me thoughts sink and my restlessness settle.

Judd Donald is an incredible artist. It’s been a fantastic walkthrough of his life and his artistic evolution. Space remains, time changes. You were there, might be just passing by me where I am standing, but you are no longer there.
Will you always Judd me?
Ps.ps. I’ve been posting my poetry in my Chinese social media. My ma apparently has been following and translating them into Chinese. She texted asking if I was depressed because she thought my poetry sounded scary 😂🤣 I was like “Ma, I am more than fine. I’m living the best of my life. Those are potty. You can just ignore them.” .

“Then in November 1968 I bought a cast-iron building on the corner of Spring and Mercer Streets. It was built in 1870 and the architect was Nicholas Whyte. The five floors were open. I thought they should remain open. Despite being ruined inside, the building set conditions which could not be violated. Most of the building simply contains art. The little I’ve added to the building in reworking the interior is nevertheless to me very important, constituting serious ideas, architectural, but also the result and cause of some works of art.” –Donald Judd, ‘Art and Architecture,’ 1987 ⠀

Donald Judd believed that works of art tend to lose their original meanings due to their continuous travelling from one museum to the other, becoming like soulless objects. The @chinatifoundation and @juddfoundation, Judd’s formerly private living and working spaces, provide a firsthand experience of his concept of permanent installation and “long-term observation”. 🌾🌾Set amidst the rugged Chihuahuan Desert (🦂🕷🦗)in the remote and isolated Texas town of Marfa, where the interplay of art, architecture and the land form a cohesive whole, they are the result of Judd long-lasting project of finding a permanent home to works of art 🏠❤️

The very first moment I saw this table by Donald Judd, I knew I would someday make a reproduction. Designed in 1982 for Judd’s Marfa compound ‘The Block’, it is large enough to accommodate all friends. Its elemental nature and monumentality lend structure and order to our own landscape, completing our garden to table circle.

⁣Earlier this year Judd Foundation announced the launch of the Index of Works, a new online database of the more than 140 works of art in the installed spaces in New York and Texas. Works in the Index are searchable by artist, work type, date, and location.⠀
⠀
Claes Oldenburg made this drawing installed at 101 Spring Street, his first known use of the mouse as a motif, as a study for a poster for his solo exhibition at the Dwan Gallery in October 1963. Through the 1960s and beyond, the mouse would become a significant figure for Oldenburg. In 1969, the artist contributed a drawing of a mouse to be etched on a tiny ceramic wafer and deposited on the moon; [The Moon Museum], measuring half an inch by three-quarters of an inch, also includes drawings by Robert Rauschenberg, David Novros, John Chamberlain, Forrest Myers, and Andy Warhol. ⠀
⠀
Donald Judd also installed two other works by Oldenburg at 101 Spring Street: [Red Sausages], 1961 and [Soft Ceiling Lights at La Coupole], 1964-1972.⠀

A visit to Donald Judd’s personal library at La Mansana de Chinati residence in Marfa, Texas. Judd was a serious bibliophile. He designed and arranged over 13,000 books spanning a vast range of subjects from history, language, art, architecture, poetry, and fiction. The Chianti Foundation has painstakingly catalogued every book title to now be accessed online, by clicking on a floor plan of the library via Chianti’s website. The virtual library has been rendered so faithfully that visitors can navigate furniture and art between the custom-built bookcases. #TheSilentTraveller #TheSilentTravellerInTexas #lamansanadechinati #donaldjudd #juddfoundation #chinatifoundation

A full six years after it opened to the public I’ve finally taken the tour of Donald Judd’s NY home at 101 Spring St. (I live 8 blocks away.) Fifty years after Judd bought it; 150 years after Nicholas Whyte designed it. In addition to the works by Judd (and his mind-blowing collection of Flavins, Oldenburg, Schwitters, Duchamp, Chamberlain, Reinhardt, Andre...) it’s one of the most beautiful domestic/work spaces I’ve ever been in, heightened by its intimate spatial relationship to his sculpture. #juddfoundation

Although with a rich history that stretches back to its founding in 1881 as a water stop on the Texas New Orleans railroad and later a military base during World War II, Marfa today is inextricably connected to Donald Judd. The artist moved here from New York in the mid 1970’s and continued to live and work here until his death in 1994. His presence is felt throughout this small town, including these three shop fronts that bare his name - his foundation HQ, his architectural practice and his art studio, all located within two blocks of each other in down town Marfa. He was committed to preserving the architectural character of this classic American town. #thetownthatjuddbuilt #marfa #donaldjudd #juddfoundation #texas #americanarchitecture #americantown #LIroadtrip
