I’m still working through a ton of photos from Iceland. We had a few days before our clients arrived and did a little exploring and got lucky with the weather conditions. Those great conditions continued throughout our trip with a few nights of stellar aurora displays. Here's an image of Haifoss from before the workshop. Many more to come. Happy Monday everyone! #iceland
Kirkjufell. We had a couple days at this iconic location. The ground cover was starting to turn beautiful Autumn colors and with some Moody morning skies you just can’t go wrong. Hope you all have a wonderful weekend!
One of the last images I captured on our whirlwind photography workshop in Iceland with @whereisweatherby. Man do I love this beach! The conditions, light, and ice chunks always seem different with each visit. I found this cluster of ice that looked like a big claw just as the sun was breaking through to shine some backlight in them. What a morning and great start to the day that ended with us kayaking among the giant icebergs that eventually whittle down to these smaller pieces. Can’t wait to rerun next year as we are working on dates now. If you’d like to join us and be the first to know, please shoot me a message! #iceland #mystopover #icelandair #photoworkshop
So this is me! Working some beautiful aurora at Vestrahorn. It’s been a super fun, action packed week for @whereisweatherby and I as we lead our group around Iceland. I’ve barely loaded any images up to my computer but our students have been hard at work creating magic as I hope you’ve seen in my stories. This one was captured by @ckcornelius28 on the night of that amazing northern light show in my previous post. #northernlights #icelandtravel
Another time lapse from our boys @nate hilt and @mouse hawaii on our Iceland Aurora Chase workshop. This was a couple nights ago as the show went on for two solid hours😮
Our Iceland workshop that I’m co-leading with @whereisweatherby is in full effect right now. 4 days down, 4 more to go. Here’s a recap of the first half of the trip chasing aurora and waterfalls by the very talented @nate hilt. 2020 dates are coming soon! Will you join us for the epic chase?
“Flamethrower” My Iceland workshop with @whereisweatherby starts today! We shot this the other night while out chasing clear skies and the aurora. This seastack was being backlit by the crescent moon giving just enough natural glow. What a night and we are looking for more this week with an enthusiastic bunch of students! #aurorachase #icelandtravel #night shooterz
I don’t ever post stuff like this but I felt it might be helpful to share some knowledge about the images that I create. When I’m out shooting my ultimate goal is to make a nice BIG print out of my file. This one was taken on a socked in foggy and dark night up on Mt.Rainier. I shot it at 16000 ISO for 5 seconds at f/8. That’s right my ISO was that high. As a general rule, to produce the highest quality print that I can I want to keep my ISO as low as possible, but sometimes that just isn’t an option to get a proper exposure. Scroll through to see the before RAW file as well as a 20x30 inch print I made. At that high an ISO there’s simply too much noise for a big print, which really started to show at 20x30. But I pretty much knew when I was shooting this that a huge 80” print wasn’t gonna be possible yet I still wanted to push my camera settings and see what happened. So after going through with this exercise, I’m fairly comfortable I could make a decent 16”x24”
Color or black & white? Newsflash: Oregon is green. Like, REALLY green. And the water here at Sahalie Falls is a nice pretty blue as well. Whenever I photograph subjects with a color overload like this I love to flip them to black and white and see what happens (that’s my contrarian nature I suppose). Without all that color distracting me, I feel I’m better able to appreciate the scene and see if the composition is actually any good. And for this one, I kinda like how there’s a cross cross action going on with the water, leaves and hillside highlights. So there you have it. I’d love to hear which one you guys prefer. And if you like B&W stuff I’ve got a whole other account dedicated to that at @blackwhitebyrne. Cheers. #upperleftusa #waterfallsofinstagram #pnwonderland #longexposure shots
A collection of subtle fall images that I took last fall in Glacier National Park. Autumn is all about color, and it can be found anywhere. Especially if you look for small scenes. I’m excited to be returning to this park next week with another group of eager students. Summer has just flown by, feels like I was just there! #intimatelandscape #smallscenes #fallcolors #montanamoment #glaciernationalpark
I’ve been really enjoying my new home out here in the Pacific Northwest. Especially the waterfalls. There are just so many in Oregon and Washington that are quite photogenic. To get to this particular off trail waterfall I had to bushwhack through 6 miles of thick forest before finding a faint game trail for elk and then rappel down a 65 foot rock face through rushing water to get to the lower bowl area that you see here. It was quite an adventure to get to a place that so few have seen before (if anyone at all). Just kidding. This is Wahclella Falls in the Gorge. It finally reopened last Monday a week before the two year anniversary of the Eagle Creek fire starting. This popular waterfall reopening gives hope that more will come next summer. So first thing Tues morning @bronwyni and I went to check it out. We were the first cars in the lot at sunrise and had it to ourselves for a couple hours before a few people began trickling in. While the damage from the fire is very visible
Is flowers on friday a thing? Cause it should be. I spent this particular morning making a new friend and I finally got a decent sunrise after being skunked for a week. Those purple flowers tho😍 #FOF #flowersforfriday #montanacolors #glaciernationalpark ——————————————————————— If you’d like to join me next year on a photography adventure, including a trip to Glacier National Park, then hit the link in my bio for more info. We opened registrations last week for a second week in Glacier and that is already 50% filled. Don’t miss out on this opportunity in the Crown of the Continent!
My favorite waterfall in Iceland. The water is really this extraordinary color of blue which is caused by the rock flour suspended in the water. You used to be able to access Bruarfoss through a short trail in a residential neighborhood. But a couple years ago the people that lived there got fed up with the trash left and parade of disrespectful tourists in their backyard so they closed access. And rightly so. Now there’s a much longer trail so you’ve got to earn this a little more. So here’s a friendly reminder when you are out in nature to please take care of our public lands, pick up after yourself and others. As my buddy @phillmonson would say, don’t be a trash hole and leave it better than you found it. On another note my fall Iceland workshop next month with @whereisweatherby is now sold out. If you’d like to be added to the waitlist or join us next year please shoot me a message to be the first to know! #waterfallwednesday
Mountain goats grazing in the distance on Logan Pass in Glacier National Park. I used a longer focal length of 220mm to compress this scene with the mountains in the distance and white goats dotting the foreground. I’ve got one spot left for anyone that wants to make a last minute trip for fall colors to Glacier. Dates are Sept 14-18 for my workshop with lodging included. See the link in my bio for more info. #montanagram #glaciernationalpark
Deep in the black waters of the Florida swamps lives a ferocious predator. As it happens when hurricanes come through these animals often get unleashed on the public. And that is exactly what is happening tonight. After 8 full months of waiting, the best time of year is finally upon us. Is it fall you might ask? No. It is college football season. 13 glorious weekends where every single one of them matters. And my Florida Gators get to kick the whole thing off against those punks from Miami tonight. As they say: if you ain’t a Gator, then you’re Gator bait. #gogators🐊🏈
Here’s one from earlier this summer down in the California Redwoods. The fog is this forest was pretty thick that morning and once the sun got high enough these spectacular light beams broke through the canopy. I had seen this before in other areas but nothing at all like the brief show I got that morning. #treehugger
