The Islands is a master-planned community within the town of Gilbert, Arizona. Located approximately 16 miles (25.7 km) southeast of Phoenix, the community contains 2,633 residential homes, 272 apartments and 26 commercial properties. The Great Mosque of Mecca, located in the city of Mecca, Saudi Arabia, is the most important mosque in the religion of Islam. It surrounds the Kaaba, a cuboid stone structure that Muslims believe to the the Bayt Allāh, or “House of God.” It is a site of pilgrimage for the Hajj — which every Muslim must do at least once in their lives — and has a capacity for 1.5 million worshippers, making it the second largest mosque in the world. /// Created by @dailyoverview, source imagery: @maxartechnologies

Located on the northern shore of the Gulf of Finland, it is the country's center of politics, education, finance, culture and research. Located about 18 miles (29 km) northwest of Kraków, the village is home to roughly 4,200 people. Spanning 137 acres (55 hectares), the park has open fields of grass, large trees, paved walkways, historic battle sites, a lake, playgrounds, athletic fields, a swimming pool and other attractions. Flax is grown for a variety of uses — in fact, its specific epithet “usitatissimum” means “most useful.”

In the past week, multiple brushfires have broken out across New South Wales and Queensland, Australia. This image, captured by the European Space Agency's Copernicus Sentinel-2 satellite on 9/8, shows smoke rising from the Yuraygir National Park area roughly 160 miles (258 km) south of Brisbane. This Overview captures Venice, Italy — a city situated upon 118 small islands that are separated by canals and linked by bridges. With tide waters expected to rise to perilous levels in the coming decades, the city has constructed 78 giant steel gates across the three inlets through which water from the Adriatic could surge into Venice’s lagoon.
