Just steps from the calm shores of Québec’s Lac Plaisant, this dreamy cottage embodies the spirit of simple living. Clad entirely in white cedar boards, the two-story residence by @yh2_architecture rests atop an invisible foundation, creating the illusion that the home is hovering above a grassy carpet. Inside, a double-height glass facade and expansive open plan further connect the home to its lakeside locale. “The house captures the essence of cottage life—a wooden home designed for vacations, that enable true communion with nature,” explains YH2’s co-founder Loukas Yiacouvakis. Take a complete tour in the link in bio.

In 1959, when acclaimed architect Jim Olson of @olsonkundig was 18 years old and a first-year architecture student, his father gave him $500 to build a bunkhouse. What began as a modest, 200-square-foot structure has evolved over the years into an extraordinary family retreat. A continual work in progress, each renovation has addressed the changing priorities of its designer: first, the structure was a bunkhouse for his friends; then, an experimental weekend retreat for a young family; and now, a quiet getaway that can accommodate both the architect’s creative work and visits from his grandchildren, extended family, and friends. Peek inside the mesmerizing Puget Sound retreat in the link in bio.

Come 2020, you’ll be able to purchase a perfect replica of Richard Neutra's legendary glass penthouse. The history of the VDL Penthouse goes back to 1963 in Los Angeles, California, when Neutra and his son Dion rebuilt the VDL Research House after a destructive fire. During the rebuild, they added a glass penthouse designed for relaxing and connecting with nature. Now more than 50 years later, outdoor brand @kettal has partnered with Dion to offer replicas of the famous building. The original structure incorporates many design strategies the elder Netura learned from his years of practice: modular composition, passive climate control, and interaction with the natural environment. Conceived for gardens, rooftops, or patios, the replicas align with Dion and Richard Neutra’s original design, but make use of modern materials and contemporary construction techniques. Learn how you can snag a penthouse replica for yourself in the link in bio.

This Swedish retreat fuses Scandinavian vibes with traditional barn-like style. Set amidst a pine tree forest near the sandy white beaches of Skåne, the summer home by @johansundbergarkitektur exudes contemporary minimalism while referencing local farmhouse vernacular. “The home is in dialogue with traditionally constructed rural houses. With its wood-clad façades and roof, its materiality is more closely related to the barns of the past. In its design and detail, however, the house is unmistakably modern,” says the firm. Head to the link in bio to peek inside.

Concrete, aluminum, and skylights create architectural alchemy in this breezy residence in Australia. Designed by Melbourne-based Architects EAT, the home, aptly called the Moving House, works in concert with the movement of the sun. Rather than place large windows in the front of the house and sacrifice privacy on the street side, @architectseat incorporated three large vaulted skylights so that natural light can enter the interiors from above, basking the living spaces in a soft glow. The exterior of the house is wrapped in a screen of white aluminum slats, which echo the architecture of the neighborhood, effectively merging brutalism and modernism. Tour the striking family home in the link in bio.

Four enormous glass doors turn this stunning Northern California home into an open-air pavilion. Directed to create a rural retreat that embraced the outdoors, San Francisco-based @feldmanarchitecture looked to custom garage-style doors. The oversized glazed panels lift dramatically to open the home to its bucolic environment. “With these doors drawn up, the site offers one sweeping, continuous view from the pool, through the great room, and down into the distant village below,” explain the architects. For a glimpse inside, check out the link in bio.

Lofts and live/work spaces evoke the bohemian lifestyle of the city-dwelling creative. Often industrial in flavor with open floor plans and raw details, lofts allow their inhabitants to wake up paces from their workspace. Perfect for a bespoke blend of work and home life, the template has had broad appeal, inspiring some to carve out homes in atypical places. Culled from the Dwell Magazine archives, we’re highlighting 12 luminous lofts that pull off the industrial look with ease. From converted warehouses to live/work retreats, these unconventional homes demonstrate why loft living is so “in.” See our favorites in the link in bio.

Balancing on irregular, rough-hewn rocks along the Norwegian coast, this renovated summer cabin intelligently navigates a challenging terrain to take full advantage of dramatic views. Located just about 16 feet from the sea, the 807-square-foot retreat perches on a small, rugged island in Vestfold County. The region consists of a number of tiny islands that have exposed rock surfaces of different heights, a topography that is often difficult to safely build upon. Oslo-based practice Lund Hagem Architects took on the challenge, drilling solid galvanized steel columns into the rock to support the house despite the uneven ground. @lundhagem then built a new structure consisting of two volumes: a lower post-and-beam volume for the bedrooms and bathrooms, and a taller volume with a large, cantilevered roof with wind-bracing gables to shelter the living, kitchen, and dining areas. Generous outdoor decks and expansive, fully-glazed sliding doors provide ample circulation while opening up the cabin to the stunning, coastal landscape. Tour the warm-weather retreat in the link in bio.

Muted tones mingle with light and shadows to form this quiet Mexican oasis. Though sited in a densely packed neighborhood in San Miguel de Allende, the dwelling acts as a calm, contemporary weekend retreat for a retired couple. Tasked with creating a serene getaway, architects @perez_palacios_aa also sought to display a strong sense of traditional Mexican character in a chic, sophisticated manner. Three inner courtyards provide perfect outdoor spaces for relaxation, while sliding glass doors blur the lines between inside and out. To peek inside, head to the link in bio.
