90 mins of gym work with Will and Ed followed by some Kata. I mixed up Shotokan and Shito Ryu this evening practicing Pinan Nidan, Sandan and Godan, Tekki Shodan, Bassai Sho, Sanseiru, Tekki Nidan and Jiin, which is in the video. I remember spending some time with Kanazawa Sensei working on this Kata to help someone preparing for their Sandan (3rd Dan) grading. It's part of the same family as Jion and Jitte. #karate #kata #shitoryu #shotokan #karatedo #shingitaimartialarts #martialartstraining #budoka #sensei #jiin
This was the view from my dojo/kwoon yesterday. Training outdoors adds a different perspective to your training. The sun shining and the wind blowing on you, the unevenness of the ground on your feet, especially if training barefoot. Learn in the dojo/kwoon and then take it with you wherever you go. #training #nature #outdoors #martialartstraining #scenery #glastonburytor #shingitaimartialarts #relaxation #yinyang
Visiting a @nationaltrust property using our annual tickets. Found a quiet spot to practice some Tai Chi. Working through the Shotokan Kata Nijushiho. On the surface it looks a simple kata to perform, but there are many nuances to master, with mant changes in direction, stance, timing and rhythm. As a club we also practice the Shito Ryu version of this Kata, which is Niseishi. As ever there are plenty of things in this Kata for me to improve upon. #karate #shotokankarate #shotokan #kata #karatekata #nijushiho #shingitaimartialarts #karatedo #japanesemartialarts #budo #sensei #yudansha
So another day and another dojo, last night I went to https://www.meikyokai.co.uk/ to practice Aikido in Neil Saunders club practicing a number of Aikido Kata. Lots of technical depth and correction. This was a little preparation earlier in the day of me practicing at the gym. As teachers of Martial Arts, I believe we have the responsibility to take ourselves out of our comfort zone and try new things and do things differently to both improve our own skills and to remind ourselves what it's like to be a beginner on the Martial Arts, we get too caught up teaching advanced 'stuff' and forget the fundamentals. #yoshinkanaikido #aikido #yoshinkan #aikidoshobukaiuk #soshin #trainhard #challenge #difficult #development
Doing some abs work with @willjandrews at the gym. Trying some new stuff with him to help adaptation. If you do the same physical exercise everytime, you won't make progress. It's been a good week or physical activities including Karate Kata, Tai Chi forns, an evening of Aikido with Kestran Wilson Sensei and his students in Wadebridge studying Irimi Nage, Nikkyo and some Jo work. An excellent teacher, whom I can recommend if you are in North Cornwall, plus various weight training exercise using my children or rocks. The highlight of my week has been snorkelling at Kynance Cove, near the Lizard Peninsula. I spent 3.5 hours swimming around these rocks and found huge shoals with 1000s of Herring and Sandeels in them. Both being chased and predated upon by Garfish and Bass. The predators were rounding the fish into an enclosed area (by the tunnel) to make it easier to catch them. I think there were at least 5 different shoals of Bass with between 6 fish and 12 in each ranging in a size from 3-4lb schoolies to over 10lbs. At one stage the Bass were taking Sandeels less than an arm's length from me, whilst the bait fish are swimming into me, in order to
Where are you wearing your Shin Gi Tai Hoody or T Shirt this summer? I'm in St. Ives in Cornwall, Seal watching.
I've been on course this weekend with Mustard Sensei and Thambu Sensei learning Aikido. During a rest at lunchtime, writing up some notes, I thought about my Tai Chi and other arts that I learn and what it means to be a Martial Artist. A good Martial Artist is relaxed, focussed, uses the body in its entirety to deliver the technique and is able to make difficult techniques look easy to perform, due to the amount of reflective practice they do. I've worked with many people over the last three days, a few I was better than, most were better than me, which was great. Why? Every time I practiced with them I got to experience what a good technique feels like and was able to study the nuances from close range. Some people don't like to be used to demonstrate techniques to a class, in reality it's a great way to feel the skills at the hands of a master exponent of that Art, like Mikey in this video, receiving from Steve Sifu. Old style traditional hands on transmission of knowledge.
I was reminded last night of the phrase "An hour with the right teacher is worth years with the wrong." I was invited to train at Mick Mercer Sensei's traditional Aikido Dojo in Preston in a class taught by Robert Mustard Sensei. A real masterclass on Hiji Shime. I was, luckily, the lowest belt present, so learnt something from all my partner's. Training in a small class in a beautiful dojo with Nidans, Sandans, Yondan and Godan teachers, thoroughly spoilt. Whatever training you do, cherish the experience and be open to learning. Time to start the weekend of training in Nottingham with Thambu Sensei and Mustard Sensei. #teachtheteacher #budolife #budospirit #yoshinkanaikido #yoshinkanaikido #shingitaimartialarts #traditionaljapanesemartialart #martialartist #budoka @aikidoburnaby
It's back to a real gym this week after working out with logs last week. I love going to the gym with my boys, they're good for motivation and for fun, even for some competition between ourselves. I was working on box pushes with 74kg of weights to help improve acceleration, when Oli decided to help with a 25kg bag. After that both Will and Oli decided to sit on it, I ended up pushing @ 145kg, that was hard. Not sure why we were getting some funny looks 😆 #gymmotivation #gymworkouts #gymtraining #gymlife #martiartsfitness #shingitaimartialarts #trainhardfighteasy #martialartstraining #legstrength #corestrength #alwaystraining #fitness #functionalfitness
Yesterday was my last day of training in Jizerka for this year. I got up early and was walking up the nearest mountain by 6am. It was so quiet and peaceful standing above the mist and reflecting upon another year of great training in Jizerka with 4 world class teachers. Also a good spot for some Tai Chi Neigong and form work. #relaxation #meditation #walking #recreation #nature #jizerka #shikontaichi #shingitaimartialarts
I'm going to miss my collection of logs in Jizerka. Hopefully by next year they'll have grown a bit larger. Working on front and lateral raises here. Also did some shoulder shrugs, lying Pec flies, shoulder presses - single arm and double and bench presses. All exercises continued to the point of failure. #strength #strengthandconditioning #strong #fittofight #fitness #fitnessmotivation #martialartslife #trainhard #trainhardfighteasy #jjzerka #shingitaimartialarts
