The heavy brick facade of Harold Street by @nestarchi gets broken down with the use of windows and timber, acting as both eaves and outdoor seating.⠀
⠀
Internally the timber joinery has been designed simply, with excessive detailing stripped away. This simplicity allows the joinery to just sit in the space and act as a backdrop for the clients' lives.⠀

Tamarama House by @porebskiarchitects was designed to be experienced outdoors just as much indoors. The L-shape plan wraps around a central courtyard, which orientates to the sun but is protected from the sea breezes. A large covered terrace connects to the upper living, creating the perfect backdrop for cocktail parties. Finally, a courtyard and pool on the ground level flows with the lower play area.⠀

Constructed off-site in Hobart, The Retreat by @jawsarchitects was transported to site and craned into place. This helped to minimise disturbance to the site, reduce construction time and allowed for a high-quality finish.⠀

Located at the end of a narrow private pathway, The Retreat is seen as a rather closed-off timber-clad pavilion. Once you go under to enter, you then walk up the stairs to a light-filled room with windows that focus on the surrounding bushland.⠀

The form of Unfurled House by @christopherpollyarchitect responds to the existing Federation home and neighbours. Wanting to reduce the impact on the neighbours to the south, the two-storey extension adjusts its massing accordingly. The home 'unfurls' to the rear, providing little moments of delight through a daybed nook and a connection to the backyard.⠀

Who else is wondering when they can move in?⠀

Clifton Hill Terraces by @fieldoffice.arch employed a range of sustainability approaches, including using a reverse brick veneer for better thermal mass, cross ventilation, off-grid power supply as well as recycling bricks from previously occupied dwellings. Clifton Hill Terraces by @fieldoffice.arch were designed for a couple in their 60s, wanting two highly-sustainable "eco-townhouses". One would be for them in retirement, and the other for close friends and family.⠀ ⠀ "The self-sufficiency of the homes provides the opportunity to consume next to no resources from the grid. The dwellings are powered purely by electricity (no gas). Solar panels with 13.68KW battery for full supply of both dwellings (60% goes back to the grid)."⠀ – Field Office Architecture⠀ ⠀ All the awesome sustainability aside, how good would it be to curl up here with a book?⠀ ⠀ Photographed by @danfarrarphotographer⠀ Built by @sustainablehomesmelbourne⠀ ⠀ #TheDesignEmotive⠀ ⠀ Published with @bowerbird.io
